August 2026: Recognizing the Signs of an Overactive Bladder

Aug 1, 2026 | Journal

Frequent or sudden trips to the restroom can interfere with work, travel, sleep, and everyday activities. While occasional urgency is normal, persistent symptoms may indicate an overactive bladder that can be evaluated and treated.

More Than Frequent Urination

Overactive bladder can cause a sudden and difficult-to-control urge to urinate. Some patients also experience leakage before reaching the restroom or find themselves waking several times during the night.

These symptoms can affect both women and men. They may be related to bladder function, medications, dietary habits, prostate enlargement, prior procedures, or underlying medical conditions.

Everyday Habits Can Make a Difference

Certain beverages and foods may irritate the bladder or increase urine production. Caffeine, carbonated drinks, artificial sweeteners, and alcohol are common examples. Adjusting when and how much you drink may reduce symptoms, but severely limiting fluids can create other problems.

Keeping a brief bladder diary can help identify patterns. Recording restroom visits, fluid intake, urgency, and leakage gives your healthcare provider useful information when developing a treatment plan.

Treatment Is Available

Overactive bladder does not have to become an accepted part of daily life. Treatment may include bladder training, pelvic floor therapy, medication, or an office-based procedure, depending on the cause and severity of your symptoms.

If bladder urgency or frequency is affecting your routine, the team at Urology Associates can help identify the cause and recommend an appropriate path forward.
