Kidney Stones Prevention and Management
If you’ve ever had a kidney stone – and one in 20 people develop them at some point in their lives – you know how painful they can be. That’s because they’re hard deposits of minerals that form within the kidney or urinary tract and are lodged there until they pass or are removed from the urinary tract. Some symptoms of kidney stones can include severe pain in your flank, abdomen, or groin, nausea, and, sometimes, blood in your urine.
Kidney stones are more likely to develop in those with certain risk factors. The risk is increased by dehydration from reduced fluid intake or if you exercise strenuously without replacing the fluid in your body. Other risk factors include a high-salt diet, excessive sugar consumption, excessive vitamin D supplementation, urinary tract infections, acidic urine, high protein diet, or other dietary, or genetic predispositions. Certain physiologic states such as pregnancy or increased parathyroid hormones may increase the risk as well.
Treatment for Kidney Stones
Although some kidney stones may pass on their own, some stones may be too large to navigate the urinary tract. In that case, certain procedures such as lithotripsy, which uses shock waves to break up the stone into smaller pieces, may be used. There are surgical solutions as well, such as passing a ureteroscope through the urethra and bladder up to the stone in the ureter or kidney.
